What is HRT Therapy?

HRT therapy is a type of hormone replacement therapy that is used for people who are not producing enough estrogen or progesterone. These hormones help control the menstrual cycle, prevent osteoporosis, and regulate mood. HRT can be given in many forms, including pills, skin patches, injections, implants under the skin (these last two types may also include progestin), vaginal rings (which release natural estrogen), or an intrauterine device that releases HRT continuously into the uterus. HRT can also be used to treat the symptoms of hypogonadism in both women and men, although HRT therapy cannot replace testosterone produced naturally by the body. Another use for HRT therapy is transgender HRT which uses HRT to help change a person's secondary sex characteristics (breast growth or redistribution of body fat) into those typical of the gender they are transitioning toward.
